It’s a new year, and a new year should always bring something fresh, so along with all the new music we’re adding each week … and it’s been a great year for new music already with new albums from Stephen Fearing and the Infamous Stringdusters … we’re adding a couple of new shows to the schedule.
Songwriters is a show defined solely by it’s title. Genre is irrelevant, as long as it is roots music … folk, country, Americana, Old Timey … it’s all good. This show is one hour of songwriters playing their own tunes.
Here’s a tune from the first playlist for Songwriters. The gifted songwriter, Brandy Clark.
The other new show requires a bit more explanation.
When we started FolkNRoots Radio, one of goals was to ensure equal representation for the voices of both male and female roots music artists. It’s a fairly well known fact that radio generally does not do a good job of being inclusive of women’s voices, and this has been a real issue in mainstream country radio, as one example, with artists speaking out.
We decided that a “Women’s Voices In Roots Music Show” would be an important part of our approach. Here’s Gretchen Peters with a song of her’s which is in our current “Women’s Voices” playlist.
What we found, however, was that because we are always consciously balancing men’s and women’s voices in all of our show playlists, the special show was skewing our overall playlist quite heavily toward women’s voices.
We could have just eliminated the show, in favour of balance in individual playlists, but we remain convinced that it is important to provide an outlet for women’s voices in particular. Our solution is to add a “Men’s Voices in Roots Music” show, and we’ll see how that works out.
Here’s Dan Layus, one of the men in our first “Men’s Voices” playlist, with one of his brilliant tunes.
So check the schedules on the web site, and let us know what you think. And as always, if you like the tunes, buy the records.
