I’m just finishing my first complete play through of the new record from Rhiannon Giddens, and from first track instant impression to final note, this is most definitely an early favourite for Roots Record of the Year.
Those familiar with her work with Carolina Chocolate Drops and her first solo album, know very well that she has a stunningly powerful voice.
Perhaps it is all in the timing, but this is absolutely an album for the moment, drenched in honest emotion and speaking truth to power.
The instrumentation is sparse on some tracks, such as “Baby Boy” and fuller on others, most notably “Better Get It Right the First Time” and the title track “Freedom Highway“, a great cover of the Staples’ classic civil rights song. The arrangements, however, always seem to come down to Rhiannon’s voice and the words, and there is a gorgeous quality to the overall production.
“Freedom Highway” is destined to be a classic album of protest and honesty.
You can look for tracks from the album on our “New Adds”, “Women’s Voices” and “Americana Music” shows in the coming week, and in the mean time, check out the official video for the lead track, “At The Purchaser’s Option“.
